Music at Marylhurst
The Department of Music at Marylhurst University in Portland, Oregon, is quickly gaining a reputation for excellence. We offer a range of music degrees, programs and courses for the major and non-major alike. Our program offers a unique combination of traditional music studies and highly personalized attention to students. With small classes, a rigorous curriculum and well-respected faculty, we work with each student to develop his or her own unique musical talents.
Music has been a vibrant part of the Marylhurst education experience since the university’s founding in 1893. In 1961, the Department of Music became an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music, making it the oldest continuously active member in the culturally rich, Portland, Oregon, region.
Vocal and Choral Studies at Marylhurst
Numbering some eighty singers, the choral and vocal arts at Marylhurst are flourishing. Whether in the Marylhurst Chorale, an auditioned ensemble, or the Choral Union, a community choir drawing members from all over the Portland area, excellence in the vocal arts has long been a Marylhurst tradition. We are proud of our exceptional vocal faculty, where small studio and class sizes allow for careful., focused instruction.
In recent years, Marylhurst singers have worked with visiting choral luminaries like Gwyneth Walker and Morten Lauridsen, both of whom hailed the Marylhurst choirs for their exceptional artistry. Each spring they ‘tread the boards’ in full productions of Gilbert and Sullivan operas, directed by world renowned expert (and former D’Oyly Carte opera star) Alistair Donkin from England. Marylhurst choirs have collaborated on concerts with choirs from Portland, Vancouver, Corvallis, Eugene and Boise, in numerous venues including the Grotto Festival of Lights and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.
Announcing the Marylhurst Choirs’ first trip to New York City, to sing at Carnegie Hall!
The choirs will sing Mozart’s Solemn Vespers on February 15th, 2015 in collaboration with choirs from around the country and professional orchestra, under the direction of Marylhurst Director of Choral Activities Justin Smith. If you’d like to join our choirs to take part in this historic opportunity, please contact Justin at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Under Justin’s direction and conduction, our choirs have thrived. We are particularly excited for his work with our Summer Choir Camp. This year Justin and the camp participants will be blogging their experiences throughout the week. We are hoping to start a tradition of bringing our choral activities, events, and theatrical moments closer to people by sharing them with you on this site.
So stay tuned!
