Ever seen a presenter open up their slides, fumble around on screen, try to make the slides big, show them properly? You see the toolbar and the sidebar, but the slide itself is lost somewhere.
If you create a presentation in Google Drive, all you need to do is add “/preview ” to the end of the shared URL (if there’s already a slash at the end “/”, just replace anything after it with “preview” ).
This launches the presentation in preview mode!
Avoid unnecessary clicking, get right into your presentation with a single link. Here’s more information on getting started with Google presentations.
Today Google launched add-ons—new tools created by developer partners that give you even more features in your documents and spreadsheets. To browse through add-ons for Docs and Sheets, select Get add-ons in the Add-ons menu of any open document or spreadsheet. Once you install an add-on it will become available across all of your documents or spreadsheets and you can start using it right away. Note that add-ons for spreadsheets are only available in the new Google Sheets.(How to turn on New Google Sheets? Turn on the new Sheets by checking the “Try the new Google Sheets” box in Google Drive settings. From then on, all new spreadsheets you create will work offline and include these new features. We’ll be adding a small list of missing features in the coming months, so if you rely on any of them, you may want to wait a little longer before opting in.)
Here’s a communication sent to all active students about the new Google Accounts:
Dear Marylhurst Student,Very soon active Marylhurst students will be provided Google Apps accounts. This will bring to fruition our goal to unify our community with a powerful set of tools for communication and collaboration, and it also marks the final phase of our Google for All! project. Please join us in thanking the Student Leadership Council—who have been vocal advocates for Marylhurst students, the Marylhurst Faculty, Staff and Administration, and the Google for All! team for making this possible.Students will begin receiving Google Apps accounts on Valentine’s day.The roll out will be in batches. Sometime between Feb 14 to 21 you will get an email, with an activation code, directing you to a website to claim your account. There, you will choose a password and set security questions. This website will also be the place to reset your Google Apps password, in case you forget it in the future. Included in our activation email will be links to more information about Google Apps.Google Apps are a powerful set of collaboration and communication tools. Google Apps are divided into two groups, Core apps and non-Core apps. Core apps include things like Google Docs and Google sites. For example, you can use Google Docs as an easy way to work on a document with multiple people and then share that document or quickly turn it into a web page. Google Sites are simple, powerful websites that could be used to share your work with a larger audience.Also included with Google Core Apps is an @marylhurst.edu gmail (i.e., email) account. Many students have been requesting a .edu email address, as it provides an easy way to identify them as students (and therefore get discounts with many vendors). Also, some find it advantageous to keep school-related communications separate. You will be able to set this new email for all your Marylhurst email communication, or you can forward it to another email account. Instructions will be in your activation email.Keep in mind, your email address will also be your user name for logging into Google Apps, even if you don’t use it to send and receive email.Other things you need to know.1. CORE Google Apps accounts may be required by instructors as a teaching tool.Just like we require the use of Moodle, faculty may require the use of Core Apps like Docs and Sites for their courses. This is handled on a course-by-course basis.2. We are providing students access to Non-Core Apps (please see this statement for more information).
Non-Core Apps are covered under an agreement between YOU and GOOGLE, and their use is optional. Marylhurst merely provides access to the non-core apps so that you do not have to continually log out of one account and into another. There are a lot of great apps here, including things like Google Scholar, YouTube, and Google+, and we hope you explore them!3. The Marylhurst Help Desk primarily supports issues such as accessing your account or error messages with your Core Google Apps. We do not have resources to support general questions about how to navigate and use Google apps (for example, “how do I create a YouTube video”) by phone or email. Fortunately, Google Apps are well documented, well known, and generally easy to use. We will be able to point you in the right direction, and your classmates and instructors may be able to assist you when use of Google Apps is required in class.

These addresses are not searchable or published online within Google. Only instructors and students in your classes will be potentially aware of your address. We chose a naming scheme based on examples from other universities, our ability to implement Google Apps within our systems, and to limit the possibility of confusion when people have similar names.
Soon all MU students will have Google Apps accounts. But why wait, you can use Google hangouts now! Google hangouts is a great way to video conference with your students. Here’s an article that will give some ideas how you can use hangouts.
Although MU has a contract with Blackboard Collaborate, which essentially does the same thing as hangouts, there are many services available. Some others are Fuzebox.com, Zoom.us, both of which offer free options, and some of the big players like gotomeeting and webex. And of course, there’s Skype and FaceTime, although those are mostly used for one-to-one communications.
Marylhurst’s help desk doesn’t support all these services, but most are very easy to set up and we do encourage some experimentation. Let us know if you have a favorite!
The switch has been flipped. Apps are running amuck, Google+ Communities, private Blogs, uploading dissertations to Google Scholar! There’s a lot you can do, have fun!
We have about 900 Google Apps accounts at Marylhurst, and collectively that’s 60GB of email messages, 676 MB per account.
Approximately 236 people use Calendar at least monthly, which is up from around 193 four months ago.
Six months ago we had 342 people collaborating on Google Docs, today we have 505!
